The sun and your hair

It is a know fact that to much of a good thing is a bad thing, but how bad is the sun for your hair?

Prolonged exposure to the sun damages the cuticle of your hair.

Signs of sun damage to your hair include discoloration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizziness. Damaged hair has a dry look and feel. Damaged hair also is unmanageable and won’t hold a curl or style. Usually, damaged hair dries quickly.

The good news is that you can take precautions to protect your hair from the summer sun.

The sun rays bleaches your hair. The melanin in your hair is coloured and is also irreversible.

The finer and lighter your hair the easier it damages in the sun.

Steps toward protection

What to do if you want to be outside during the summer, here are some tips.

  • Go out early or late in the day, just as you would to protect your skin. Stay inside between 11am-3pm.

  • Wear a hat or cover yourself with an umbrella.

  • If you swim in a chlorinated pool, take a shower and wash out the chlorine from your hair afterwards.\
